In India, a toran (TOH-run) is hung over a doorway as a sign of welcome. Torans made of fresh flowers and leaves can be seen all across the country. In Rajasthan (RAH-juh-stahn) in northwest India where this story takes place, torans are made of fabric and often decorated with brightly colored embroidery, appliqués, and mirrors. The cloth pennants that hang down represent leaves from sacred trees.
